Description

A hearty Amish-inspired casserole made with seasoned hamburger steaks, creamy mushroom sauce, and baked with potatoes for a comforting family-style meal.

Ingredients

  • 2 lbs ground beef
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp paprika
  • 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 cups sliced potatoes (parboiled or thinly sliced)
  • 1 (10.5 oz) can cream of mushroom soup
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 2 tbsp butter, melted
  • 2 tbsp fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  2. In a large bowl, mix ground beef, onion, garlic, salt, pepper, paprika, and Worcestershire sauce. Form into 6–8 hamburger steak patties.
  3. Heat a skillet over medium-high heat and sear patties for 2–3 minutes per side until browned (they will finish cooking in the oven).
  4. Layer sliced potatoes evenly in the bottom of the prepared baking dish.
  5. Place hamburger patties on top of the potatoes.
  6. In a small bowl, whisk together cream of mushroom soup and milk. Pour evenly over the patties and potatoes.
  7. Sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese on top and drizzle with melted butter.
  8. Cover with foil and bake for 35 minutes. Remove foil and bake an additional 10 minutes until cheese is bubbly and golden.
  9. Garnish with fresh parsley before serving.

Notes

  • Use cream of chicken soup instead of mushroom for a milder flavor.
  • Serve with a side of buttered green beans or a simple salad for a complete meal.
  • This dish reheats well and is great for meal prep.
