Description

Light and crispy churro bites made in the air fryer, coated in cinnamon sugar for a healthier twist on the classic fried treat.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup whole wheat flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened applesauce
  • 2 tbsp melted coconut oil
  • 1/4 cup honey or maple syrup
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar (or coconut sugar)
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • Olive oil spray

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt.
  2. In another bowl, mix applesauce, melted coconut oil, honey, and vanilla extract until smooth.
  3. Combine wet and dry ingredients to form a thick dough.
  4. Transfer dough to a piping bag fitted with a star tip and pipe 1-inch pieces onto a parchment-lined tray.
  5. Preheat air fryer to 375°F (190°C). Lightly spray churro bites with olive oil.
  6. Air fry in batches for 6-8 minutes, or until golden and crisp.
  7. Mix sugar and cinnamon in a small bowl. While churro bites are still warm, toss them in the cinnamon sugar mixture.
  8. Serve immediately with a side of melted dark chocolate or fruit dip if desired.

Notes

  • Use coconut sugar for a refined sugar-free option.
  • Best enjoyed fresh, as they lose crispness over time.
  • You can freeze uncoated churro bites and reheat in the air fryer.
