Homemade Chicago-Style Deep Dish Pizza is a hearty, iconic pizza with a buttery thick crust, layers of gooey cheese, rich tomato sauce, and classic Italian seasonings baked to perfection.
Ingredients
- 3 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup yellow cornmeal
- 2 1/4 teaspoons instant yeast
- 1 1/2 teaspoons sugar
- 1 1/4 cups warm water
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 3 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
- 1 can (28 oz) crushed tomatoes
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1 teaspoon dried basil
- 1/2 teaspoon salt (for sauce)
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 2 tablespoons grated Parmesan cheese
Instructions
- In a bowl, mix flour, cornmeal, yeast, sugar, and salt.
- Add warm water, melted butter, and olive oil. Mix until a dough forms.
- Knead dough for 5–7 minutes until smooth.
- Place dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise for 1–1.5 hours.
- Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C).
- Grease a deep-dish pizza pan generously with butter.
- Press dough into the pan, pushing up the sides.
- Layer mozzarella cheese evenly over the crust.
- In a bowl, mix crushed tomatoes, garlic, oregano, basil, salt, and pepper.
- Spoon tomato sauce over the cheese layer.
- Sprinkle Parmesan cheese on top.
- Bake for 30–35 minutes until crust is golden and filling is bubbly.
- Let rest for 10 minutes before slicing.
Notes
- Cheese goes under the sauce to prevent burning.
- Use whole-milk mozzarella for best texture.
- Let the pizza rest before cutting for clean slices.
