Description

Ingredients

  • For the Red Velvet Cake:
    • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
    • 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
    • 1 teaspoon baking soda
    • 1 teaspoon salt
    • 1 tablespoon unsweetened cocoa powder
    • 1 1/2 cups vegetable oil
    • 1 cup buttermilk, room temperature
    • 2 large eggs, room temperature
    • 2 tablespoons red food coloring
    • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
    • 1 teaspoon white vinegar
  • For the Cream Cheese Frosting:
    • 16 oz cream cheese, softened
    • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
    • 4 cups powdered sugar
    • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract


Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, baking soda, salt, and cocoa powder.
  3. In another bowl, mix oil, buttermilk, eggs, food coloring, vanilla extract, and vinegar until combined.
  4. Gradually add wet ingredients to dry ingredients and mix until smooth.
  5. Divide batter evenly between prepared pans.
  6. Bake for 30–35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
  7. Cool cakes in pans for 10 minutes, then turn out onto wire racks to cool completely.
  8. To make frosting, beat cream cheese and butter until smooth.
  9. Add powdered sugar gradually and beat until fluffy. Mix in vanilla extract.
  10. Frost cooled cake layers and assemble as desired.
