Description

Tender, juicy Salisbury steak-style meatballs smothered in a rich mushroom gravy and served over creamy garlic herb mashed potatoes for a comforting, hearty meal.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1/3 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp Dijon mustard
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 8 oz mushrooms, sliced
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tsp soy sauce
  • 1/2 tsp dried thyme
  • Garlic Herb Mashed Potatoes:
  • 2 lbs russet or Yukon gold potatoes, peeled and cubed
  • 4 tbsp butter
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream or milk
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tbsp fresh parsley, chopped
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, mix ground beef, breadcrumbs, milk, egg, Worcestershire sauce, Dijon mustard, onion powder, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Form into 1-inch meatballs.
  2. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Brown the meatballs on all sides (they don’t need to be cooked through). Remove and set aside.
  3. In the same skillet, add butter and diced onion; sauté until translucent. Add mushrooms and cook until softened and browned.
  4. Stir in flour and cook for 1 minute. Slowly whisk in beef broth, soy sauce, and thyme. Bring to a simmer until thickened.
  5. Return the meatballs to the skillet and simmer in the gravy for 10–12 minutes, or until cooked through.
  6. Meanwhile, boil potatoes in salted water until tender, about 15 minutes. Drain and mash with butter, cream, garlic, parsley, salt, and pepper until smooth and creamy.
  7. Serve the meatballs and mushroom gravy over the garlic herb mashed potatoes. Garnish with extra parsley if desired.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, add a splash of red wine to the gravy.
  • Use ground turkey or chicken for a lighter version.
  • The mashed potatoes can be made ahead and reheated with a splash of milk.
  • For a gluten-free option, use gluten-free breadcrumbs and flour.
